Lost Vietnam War Photos?
If anyone recognizes these, please contact Duff Smith, Jr. at: dinotheorist@yahoo.com
Two dollars. That's what the price sticker said on the bottom of the red-and-gray tin that I pulled from the bargain bin. The tin would have been worth that much empty, but anyone could tell it was full. I wondered how a personal photo collection wound up in an Ocala, FL thrift store,  and I speculated that it might contain images of someone's vacation to Hawaii or Europe.

Then I held one up to the light.

It took only a few samples to realize that what I had was about 200 photographs of Vietnam and Thailand, the reference dates ranging from 1967-75. Although the composition of many of them suggested a skilled amateur was behind the lens, the condition of the slides themselves was strikingly mint. The Saigon skyline, stressed-out soldiers, city parks and bombed VC hideouts were intermingled with close-ups of flowers and spiders. And a few, only a handful, contained people among whom the photographer him/herself may be standing. But without complete names to go with the faces, there was nothing to do but have the collection scanned to jpg's and posted on the web. So... does anyone recognize their relatives in here?
Some of the soldier picks have names handwritten on the white cardboard frames surrounding the film -- not on this one unfortunately, but...
"Sgt. Parsons"
"Gas station where the V.C. holed up."
There are pictures of Thailand as well.
This one is my favorite. A 30+-year-old slide?? You have to be kidding me.
Is this the photographer? He's holding a camera all right, but my personal guess is that the shooter of all these pictures was a woman. One of the many nature photos in the collection shows the shooter's hand or foot which appears to be female. This was one of the frames with femenine handwriting bearing the subject's name:
"Maj. Dukes."
A busy Saigon crosswalk. Someone seems to be receiving some kind of citation in the background while the uniformed man in the foreground looks on. That's a cool motorbike he's got there.
Was this the mystery photographer? Anyone recognize her?
